| ARABELLA
DORMAN
British artist, Arabella Dorman
continues to gain an increasingly wide reputation for her
portrait paintings (see the artist's
Portraits statement), landscapes
and, more recently, her work with the British military in
Iraq and Afghanistan (see the artist's
Frontlines statement).
Arabella’s paintings are an unusual blend of contemporary
perception and classical technique. Though in every way
an expression of the modern day, her work demonstrates a
rare adherence to classical values, which owes much to both
an MA in History of Art & English as well as four rigorous
years of training in the old master techniques in Italy.
Based in London, Arabella works on portraits commissioned
from around the world, and increasingly on paintings for
the British military. She has also traveled extensively
through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East producing
landscapes in oil and watercolour for several successful
exhibitions. These journeys have added further depth to
her work, clearly discernable in recent paintings from Iraq
and Afghanistan.
Drawn from first hand observations whilst living and traveling
with the British army in Southern Iraq (December 2006) and
Sangin, Helmund Province (September – October 2009)
Arabella's military work explores the everyday life of the
soldiers carrying out their duties as well as their psychological
experiences of the conflict and its aftermath.
Arabella’s growing reputation as a war artist is
balanced by a long-standing career as a portrait painter.
Her accomplished portraits reveal her rigorous training
and adherence to traditional values, whilst also reflecting
her keen interest in the innate character of her sitters.
Arabella’s particular treatment of light, shade and
bold expressive style result in portraits that combine an
unusual blend of subtlety and tone with a genuine expression
of her subjects inner personality.
Having recently returned from her second trip around the
country, Arabella is currently working towards her forthcoming
exhibition - Impressions from Afghanistan - which will be
on exhibit in St James, London, 2011.
